I wonder how updating syncosync will work. Does it update itself automatically? Because there could be security issues that need to be patched.
If I have to reflash newer versions of the RPi image that would not be good - I can do it, but my brother will be at a loss.

You definitely should not need to reflash your Pi.
There is a repository that is added to the apt sources that is used for updates by the underlying raspbian system.
Additionally, unattended-upgrades is set-up as well, which should take care of important security updates.
